Portrait fills the feed
Instagram shows feed photos 1080 pixels wide. A 4:5 portrait photo (1080 × 1350) is the tallest regular post, so it takes up the most of the screen.
The 3:4 profile grid
Your profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles. A 1080 × 1440 photo fills a tile without a crop; 4:5 and square posts are cut at the sides in the grid only.
