How it works

  1. Take the photo

In color, against a plain white or off-white background, without glasses, taken in the last 6 months, down to the edge of your shoulders. Then tap Upload photo.

  2. Pick what you need

Resize opens on US passport with Online renewal photo picked: the whole photo is kept, because the renewal application lets you crop it there. For a paper form tap Printed photo 2 × 2 in and drag the box.

  3. Save and download

Tap Save & get link. You see the pixels and the size of the JPG — tap Download and upload it in your online renewal.

The official rules

For online renewal the State Department asks for a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file between 54 KB and 10 MB, in color, taken in the last 6 months, against a plain white or off-white background, without glasses. The bottom of the photo should be the edge of your shoulders. Do not take a photo of a printed photo or scan one.

No pixel rule

The online renewal page sets no pixel size — the application has its own crop tool. So Online renewal photo keeps your whole photo and its pixels, with no crop and no retouching, and only makes sure the JPG is between 54 KB and 10 MB. An iPhone HEIC photo becomes a JPG in that range.

Printed photo 2 × 2 in

For a paper form the photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head 1–1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm). Printed photo 2 × 2 in crops a square, makes 600 × 600 pixels and marks the JPG as 300 DPI, so at its own size it prints 2 × 2 inches.

Not the visa rule

The US visa rule — 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 kB or less — is not the rule for passport online renewal. For a visa photo use the US visa photo page.

US passport renewal photo: questions

What size should a US passport online renewal photo be?

Between 54 KB and 10 MB, as a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file. The official page sets no pixel size.

Does the renewal photo have to be 600 × 600 pixels?

No. 600 × 600 is the visa rule. The online renewal page gives only the file size, 54 KB to 10 MB.

Can I crop the photo?

Yes, in the renewal application — the State Department says you can reposition or crop your photo there. BasePic keeps the whole photo, so nothing is lost before that.

What size is a printed US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). BasePic makes 600 × 600 pixels, marked 300 DPI.
