The official rules
The Chinese Visa Application Service Center says the photo in the online application form can only be a JPEG, with dimensions not over 354 × 472 pixels and a file size between 40 KB and 120 KB, taken within the past 6 months against a white or close to white background.
The printed photo
Following the instruction of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the printed photo is 48 mm high and 33 mm wide, with the head 28–33 mm high and 15–22 mm wide, in color, with a neutral expression, eyes open, lips closed and ears visible, printed on glossy photo paper. Printed photo 33 × 48 mm crops to that shape, makes 390 × 567 pixels and marks the JPEG as 300 DPI, so at its own size it prints 33 × 48 mm.
What BasePic does
Online form photo crops your photo to 3 : 4, makes it exactly 354 × 472 pixels — the largest size the form takes — and saves a JPEG between 40 and 120 KB. If even the highest quality stays under 40 KB, BasePic tells you; it does not make the photo larger than 354 × 472. The background, the light and your pose come from the photo you take.
Glasses and head wear
Glasses are allowed, except thick-rimmed, tinted or glare glasses. Hats and other head wear only for religious reasons, and the face must stay fully visible.
